It was well known among members of the Beechy Hollow Great Outdoors Club that Rufus Sneed saw himself as something of an inventor.

There was, for example, his Shootin’ Tootin’ Lead Shot. Rufus dreamed this up as a casting solution for spin fishermen who wanted to fish with flies but couldn’t get the hang of using a fly rod.

The idea was that anglers would tie on a fly, then attach one of Rufus’s patented lead weights to their line. They’d sling their rods with a mighty heave and let the weight carry their line clear across the river. The lead weight had a release mechanism that allowed it to break free at peak casting velocity. The line and fly would then fall delicately to the water, hopefully into the mouth of a hungry trout.

Rufus was sure this invention was going to be his ticket to fame and riches. There was only one problem. The line would fall into the water, right enough, but the lead shot would keep on going. When a weight becomes airborne at high velocity it has the stubborn tendency to behave like a ballistic missile — much to the chagrin and irritation of any anglers…
